Who is Xochitl Gomez?

Xochitl Gomez is an American actress of Mexican descent, best known for playing America Chavez in Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Dawn Schafer in Netflix’s The Baby-Sitters Club.

She began performing as a child and gradually built a career spanning television, film, animation, and reality television. Her breakthrough in the Marvel Cinematic Universe introduced her to a global audience, while her victory on Dancing with the Stars demonstrated her ability to perform outside traditional acting roles.

Early Life and Education

Xochitl Gomez was born on April 29, 2006, in Los Angeles, California, where she grew up in a Mexican-American family. Her upbringing exposed her to the cultural traditions of her Mexican heritage while she developed an interest in performing and entertainment.

Her interest in acting began at a young age. When she was around five, her mother enrolled her in a musical theatre class. Gomez quickly became enthusiastic about performing and participated in numerous stage productions during her childhood.

Before transitioning into larger film and television roles, she gained experience through local theatre productions, commercials, and short films. These early opportunities helped her become comfortable performing in front of audiences and cameras.

Her parents supported her interest in acting and helped her attend auditions. She also trained in martial arts, which later helped her prepare for physically demanding action scenes.

Gomez has spoken about her Mexican heritage and her ability to speak Spanish. Her cultural background has remained an important part of her public identity as she has developed her career in Hollywood.

Career

Xochitl Gomez began her acting career in youth theatre, commercials, and smaller screen roles. One of her early television credits was an appearance as a school journalist in the Disney Channel series Raven’s Home in 2018. She later appeared in other productions, including Evil Things, You’re the Worst, and Gentefied, gaining experience in different television roles.

In 2018, she appeared in the short film The Letter. She later played Chucky in the action film Shadow Wolves, released in 2019. These projects helped her build her credits as she continued pursuing larger opportunities.

A significant step in her career came in 2020 when she was cast as Dawn Schafer in Netflix’s The Baby-Sitters Club. Based on Ann M. Martin’s popular book series, the television adaptation followed a group of young friends who started a babysitting business. Gomez appeared in the first season, playing Dawn, a character known for her independent personality and interest in social issues. The series introduced her to a broader audience and strengthened her profile as a young television actress.

Her career reached a major turning point when Marvel Studios cast her as America Chavez in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Directed by Sam Raimi, the 2022 superhero film starred Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, with Elizabeth Olsen, Benedict Wong, Rachel McAdams, and Chiwetel Ejiofor also appearing in key roles.

Gomez’s character, America Chavez, can travel between universes by creating star-shaped portals. The role required her to participate in action sequences and portray a young superhero navigating unfamiliar realities. Gomez prepared for the part through physical training, including martial arts and stunt preparation.

Working with Cumberbatch, Olsen, Wong, McAdams, and Ejiofor marked an important milestone in her professional development. Her performance also introduced America Chavez to audiences encountering the character for the first time through the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

After her Marvel debut, Gomez continued pursuing different roles. In 2020, she appeared in the film Roped as Emma. Her credits also include short films and other independent productions, letting her explore characters beyond the superhero genre.

In 2023, Gomez competed on season 32 of Dancing with the Stars. She was partnered with professional dancer Valentin Chmerkovskiy, and the pair progressed through the competition with their ballroom and contemporary routines. Their performances earned them the season’s championship, making Gomez one of the show’s youngest winners. Her participation also introduced her to viewers who knew her primarily for her acting.

In 2026, Gomez appeared in Hive, a horror thriller in which she plays Sasha, a young babysitter caught in a frightening situation involving children and a sinister presence. The film was directed by Felipe Vargas and also features Aaron Dominguez and Zenobia Kloppers. Its darker tone gave Gomez a chance to take on a leading role outside her best-known Marvel work.

Another major project for 2026 is the animated film The Cat in the Hat. Gomez voices Gabby in the new adaptation inspired by Dr. Seuss’s classic children’s book. The voice cast includes Bill Hader, Quinta Brunson, Matt Berry, America Ferrera, Giancarlo Esposito, and Bowen Yang. The film is directed by Alessandro Carloni and Erica Rivinoja, adding voice acting to Gomez’s growing list of professional credits.
