Many relationships today are silently breaking under the weight of pressure, comparison, and unrealistic expectations. One of the saddest things is watching two young people who genuinely care about each other slowly drift apart because of money problems and impatience.
A lot of young men are out there fighting battles nobody sees. Especially in a country like Nigeria, survival alone can feel like a full-time job. A man could be struggling to pay rent, support his family, handle bills, feed himself, build a future, and still try his best to make his relationship work. Yet despite all that pressure, some women still compare their man to others they see online or around them.
You are dating someone who is genuinely trying, someone who wakes up every day thinking about how to improve his life and create something better for both of you, but because he cannot afford every luxury right now, you begin to lose respect for him. Suddenly, the relationship becomes all about what he can provide materially, rather than the effort, loyalty, love, and sacrifice he brings to the table.
The painful part is that some people immediately start looking elsewhere the moment hardship appears. They begin entertaining other men, cheating, selling their bodies, or chasing people with more money simply because they want a faster lifestyle. Instead of building with the person who truly loves them, they abandon patience and loyalty for temporary comfort and flashy appearances.
But sometimes it is important to sit down and think deeply for a moment. Many of the expensive things being demanded in relationships are things even parents struggle to provide. Sometimes you ask your family for certain things, and they cannot afford them. Sometimes your siblings cannot help either. Sometimes, even you personally cannot work enough to get those things for yourself yet. So why treat someone you claim to love like a failure simply because he has not “made it” yet?
Not every man is lazy. Not every struggling man is irresponsible. Some are genuinely trying their hardest with the little they have. Some are sacrificing sleep, peace of mind, and happiness just to survive and still keep their relationship alive. Yet instead of encouragement, they receive insults, pressure, comparison, disrespect, and emotional stress from the very person they thought would be their peace.
Social media has also made things worse. Every day, people see friends posting about vacations, expensive gifts, luxury dates, designer clothes, and a soft life online. What many fail to understand is that not every flashy lifestyle is clean or genuine. Some people are involved in fraud, dangerous activities, fake lifestyles, or hidden struggles nobody talks about publicly. Yet because of comparison, some women return home angry at their own partner for not providing the same things.
“That kind of pressure can destroy a man mentally“
A man who is already struggling financially does not need constant reminders that he is not enough. He does not need to feel ashamed every single day because another man bought someone an iPhone, a car, or expensive gifts. Encouragement can go much further than criticism. Sometimes all a struggling person needs is someone who believes in them while they are still trying to figure life out.
Relationships were never meant to feel like competitions. They are supposed to be partnerships where two people support each other through difficult seasons and celebrate together when better days finally come. Real love is tested more in hard times than in comfortable ones. Anybody can stay when life is sweet and easy, but loyalty becomes visible when things are uncertain.
There is also nothing wrong with deciding that a relationship is no longer what you want. If you truly feel you cannot continue because the situation is too difficult, be honest about it. Communicate clearly and leave respectfully instead of cheating, humiliating the person, or emotionally destroying them while pretending to stay committed.
Many young men today are silently battling depression, anxiety, frustration, and emotional exhaustion. Society constantly expects them to provide, succeed quickly, stay strong, never complain, and carry everybody’s burdens at once. Some are breaking down internally but still smiling on the outside because they feel no one cares about their struggles.
“This is why peace matters so much in relationships“
If someone is genuinely trying to build a future and you cannot support that journey, at least do not become another source of pain in their life. If you cannot be patient, be honest. If you cannot encourage them, leave respectfully. But constantly making someone feel worthless because they are not financially stable yet can deeply damage their confidence and mental health.
At the end of the day, relationships should not only be about what a person has today. Sometimes the most valuable thing is finding someone with vision, determination, loyalty, and a genuine heart. Money can come later. Success can come later. Better days can come later. But once respect, peace, and loyalty are destroyed, rebuilding them becomes much harder.
“A relationship should feel like a safe place, not another battlefield“

Love is never enough
