Who Is Ms Jorji?

Ms Jorji, whose real name is Independence Jorji Akuoma, is a Nigerian-born rapper, singer, engineer and entrepreneur based in Texas, United States.

She is known for her Afro-Trap sound, which brings together African musical influences and elements of hip-hop and trap. She entered the music industry professionally in 2021 and has since released several songs while building a name for herself as an independent artist.

Early Life and Education

Independence Jorji Akuoma was born on September 23, 1993, in Imo State, Nigeria. She spent part of her early life in Nigeria before eventually moving to the United States.

Ms Jorji’s path before music was different from that of many artists. She pursued education and a professional career in engineering before deciding to take music more seriously.

She attended Texas Southern University, where she studied engineering. During her time at the university, she was also associated with Megan Thee Stallion, who attended the same institution.

Her educational background gave her experience in a field outside entertainment. She later worked in the technology and corporate sector, including a period associated with IBM.

Ms Jorji eventually settled in Texas, where she began developing her career as a recording artist. Her Nigerian background and life in America would later influence the sound she brought into her music.

Career

Ms Jorji’s entry into music came after she had already established herself in the professional world.

She initially became involved with music while working with a producer and demonstrating how she believed a particular beat could be performed. Her performance received enough encouragement for her to consider recording professionally.

The experience led to her first single, Pucci, which was released in 2021. The song was initially created as a reference track for producer Nazzi, but the response to the recording encouraged Ms Jorji to release it as her own song.

Following Pucci, she continued developing her sound and performing around Texas, particularly in the Dallas and Houston areas. Her musical identity became increasingly associated with Afro-Trap. Rather than copying either Nigerian Afrobeats or American trap completely, she began combining elements from both styles to create a sound that reflected her experiences in Nigeria and the United States.

One of her notable releases is Shake It, which helped further establish the direction of her music. Other songs in her catalogue include VIP, FOB, LIT., Nothing Like You, Wassup and Date Like Lori.

Ms Jorji has also worked with other artists and music professionals. Her collaborations and professional relationships have included Nazzi, Bigg Cuz and Ken The Man.

Her involvement in the music industry has not been limited to performing. She has also taken an interest in artist development and management. She was involved in the career of Nazzi and played a role in helping him pursue opportunities within the American music industry.

In 2022, Ms Jorji signed with Recoup Records, adding another stage to her development as a professional recording artist.

Away from music, her engineering and business background has remained part of her identity. Her career is therefore a combination of entertainment, professional experience and entrepreneurship rather than music alone.

Ms Jorji has also become known for her outspoken personality. Her interviews and social-media posts have covered relationships, money, dating, sexuality and other social issues. Some of her comments have generated strong reactions from Nigerian audiences and helped her develop a following beyond people who know her primarily as a musician.

She attracted further attention in 2024 after making comments concerning Regina Daniels and Ned Nwoko. The discussion increased her visibility among Nigerian social-media users.

In 2026, Ms Jorji became the subject of another major online conversation after publicly making allegations concerning Poco Lee. She described an alleged incident involving the entertainer in Dallas and said that she and a female friend had visited him in connection with her music career.

The claims sparked a heated conversation on Nigerian social media, with VeryDarkMan also becoming involved in the discussion. Ms Jorji subsequently responded to the criticism and maintained her position.

The allegations involving Poco Lee have not been established as fact by a court. They should therefore be understood as claims made publicly by Ms Jorji rather than confirmed findings.
