Early Life and Education
Mike Tomlin was born on March 15, 1972, in Hampton, Virginia, to mother, Julia Tomlin, and father Ed Tomlin. His parents separated when he was about 10 months old, and he had limited contact with his biological father, who passed away in 2012.
He was primarily raised by his mother and stepfather, Leslie Copeland (whom Julia married when Mike was six), in a modest household in Hampton, Virginia, where education and hard work were emphasized.
Tomlin attended Denbigh High School in Newport News, Virginia, where he was an honor student and played wide receiver/tight end. He earned a football scholarship to the College of William & Mary, graduating in 1995 with a degree in sociology after catching 101 passes and 20 touchdowns as a wide receiver.

Mike Tomlin began his coaching career in 1995 as a wide receivers coach at Virginia Military Institute, then moved to Memphis (1996) as a graduate assistant. He served as defensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings (2006) before being hired as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2007, becoming the franchise’s first African-American head coach.
